First of all, Thank you to Ducati, Triumph, and Yamaha of Marin for being so
nice and letting us meet at your dealership. Your hospitality was great and
we will be needed that cake recipe.
Ride report for March 10th ride.
14 Triumph's and one Honda. A good turnout and a beautiful day.
Mike F. lead the group away from the dealership after a slight delay because a
Tiger had a temper. We headed through town and got to Highway 1 and headed
north. As we headed north through Marin County, Hwy 1 runs next to the ocean
for a few miles, and through Point Reyes National Seashore. As you a headed
north, we passed the Tides Restaurant in Bodega Bay, it was used as a backdrop
in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. It has been rebuilt, but still looks very
close to the same. Did I mention the view? Incredible! We could see for
miles and miles since it was so clear.
Headed north out of Bodega Bay, the road twists past Coleman Valley Rd. There
are some beautiful homes on the bluffs and then down the hill to Highway 116
which heads back inland to Guerneville along the banks of the Russian River
After leavening Hwy 1 at Skaggs Springs on Skaggs Springs Stewarts Point Rd.
the road bottlenecks to a mere one lane with an intense drop-off and no guard
rail. It does this over and over again. Twisting and rising into the
redwoods up to Las Lomas, elevation 1952 ft., the high point of the ride. The
best part of this section was where the 20 or so exotics, like Ferrari's, were
thrashing their cars coming at us.
What made the eastern portion of Skaggs Spring Stewarts Point Rd so nice is
the road itself. Wide, perfectly smooth and intense sweeping corners without
scary hairpins in the eastern half of the ride above Lake Sonoma. This is
after the goat trail part of course. You can see it coming a long way off.
Relaxed speeds in the corners can easily be 60mph. The daredevils in the
bunch may even be moving along faster than that (Scott on the Honda and
Hans).
At the end of the ride we all settled down at Bear Republic Brewery in
Healdsburg for some lunch. BS'ed about the ride and the great day. We took
some pictures of the bikes and then all headed home.
I would like to say thanks to Mike F. for a wonderful route and a great lead
on the day. You are more than welcome to lead a ride again.
